Shelter Island

Aptly named, Shelter Island is home to a number of small bays and tidal lagoons. The island seems to have escaped the new development of the surrounding mainland areas. A collection of small historic cottages still line the shoreline. Getting here requires a ferry boat ride and a bit of effort, which keeps the crowds down.

Sunset sessions are the best sessions.

On busy weekends the bay will fill with afternoon boat traffic. The boaters typically return home before dinner however leaving the riding area deserted at sunset.

Field Notes.

Each summer I try to explore new riding locations on the east end of Long Island. This spot on Shelter Island was a new discovery this summer and one that will certainly be added to the regular visit list in years to come.

A kite trip to Shelter Island is not complete without a stop for tacos in Sag Harbor on the way back. Iā€™m looking forward to getting back out there next summer to explore some new photo angles and perspectives.
