Montauk Kiteboarding

A warm west wind mid summer in Montauk can cause time to stand still for a few hours.

Family, friends, farm stands, bare feet, iced coffees, Carrisa’s baked goods, back roads, back yards and 18-22 knots in the afternoon is as good as life gets. Montauk doesn’t deliver the latter very often, but when it does there are few places you’d rather be.

Few things can compare to the serenity experienced kiting flat water at sunset.

Sunset sessions at Napeague (with consistent wind) can be few and far between, but even one golden hour session cruising the flat water slick behind the dune is enough to make memories for an entire summer.

Field Notes.

Montauk isn’t a world renowned kite destination, and for good reason, it’s not consistently windy. The primary summer breeze is a gusty southwest than can be frustrating to say the least. Spring and Fall can be more consistent and during the week you’ll likely have the entire place to yourself.

If you are also a surfer there are times when you’ll be faced with a major dilemma. The best kite breeze for the lagoon at Napeague is northwest which also happens to be the best breeze for surfing as it’s offshore and cleans up most of the local beach breaks. Tough choices!
