Bella Coola, British Columbia is a coastal fishing village 5 hours from the nearest stoplight. Just short drive from the fishing docks, Eagle lodge hosts 12 heli skiers each week and guests enjoy access to some of the best high alpine terrain in all of Canada. There are few places on earth closer where I’ve felt closer to God, literally and figuratively, than in the mountains of Bella Coola. Fridtjof Nansen, an early Norwegian ski pioneer, was not alone in his thoughts. It’s impossible to not notice a divine presence in the mountains, and nowhere does that seem more evident than here.
Field Notes.
Eagle Lodge is wonderful destination for first time heli skiers. In Bella Coola’s heli ski program you will find plenty of access to wide open alpine bowls. These low angle powder fields with incredible views are perfect for powder seekers looking to escape the local lift lines. The alpine terrain is what they are famous for, so if you’re looking for tree skiing you are in the wrong place. Since the lodge is small and intimate it’s ideal for private group buyouts.
Access to Eagle Lodge, despite its remoteness, is actually quite easy. The Bella Coola staff will arrange a short charter flight from Vancouver which is nearly as beautiful as the skiing. Once on site, the wifi and cell service are actually surprisingly excellent, my only wish would be for the addition of a sauna and steam room!
